GST compliance

How the GSTgets done.

What Varynt Invoice decides for you, what it prints, and, just as plainly, what it does not do.

This page explains how the product behaves. It isn't tax advice; your CA has the last word on your own filings.

No. 01Tax type

The place of supply decides.

It defaults to the client's billing state, which the GSTIN already told us, and you can change it on any document. Each line carries its own rate from your list of rates.

Seller registered as Regular, client in the same state

→ CGST + SGST, each half the rate

Seller registered as Regular, client in another state

→ IGST, the whole rate

Seller under Composition, or not registered

→ No tax lines at all

Rates are yours to keep current: your list starts with 0, 5, 18 and 40% switched on, and 12% and 28% kept for older invoices, and you switch slabs on and off as notifications change. A document charges only a notified slab: 0, 0.25, 3, 5, 12, 18, 28 or 40%, so gold and silver at 3% and diamonds at 0.25% can be invoiced.

No. 02Registration

Regular, Composition, or not registered.

Set once in your business details. It decides the title at the top of every document and whether tax lines appear at all.

No. 03Numbering

Numbers the law will accept.

One series per document type, restarting every financial year. These rules are enforced by the product, not left to whoever issues the invoice.

INV/26-27/0042 is 14

One series per financial year

April to March, taken from the invoice's own date

Allocated at issue

A draft has no number. Quotations, credit notes, purchase orders and vendor credits have series of their own

Never reused

Cancelling keeps the number, marked cancelled, so there is no gap

One series per branch

Where you bill from several GSTINs, each branch numbers on its own prefix (MUM/26-27/0001)

Dated in order

An issue date can't be in the future, or earlier than the last issued invoice

No. 05Lines that aren't simple

Nil, exempt, non-GST, and cess.

Two things most businesses never meet and some meet on every invoice. Both are recorded per line, and both stay out of the way of everyone who doesn't need them.

  • Nil-rated, exempt or non-GST, per line

A 0% line is one of three different things in GSTR-1 table 8, so the editor records which. Per line, because one invoice often carries a taxable service beside an exempt one.

  • Compensation cess on notified goods

Ad valorem, a fixed amount per unit, or both, charged as the sum or the higher of the two, as the notifications set it. One amount beside GST, never split between centre and state.

  • Invisible until you need it

A workspace that never creates a cess rate never sees a cess field, and its figures are exactly what they were.

  • Reverse charge

On a sale, the invoice says tax is payable on reverse charge and charges none. On a purchase, the tax is still computed and claimable, and the vendor is owed less than the bill says.

No. 06Input tax credit

Decided per line, not per bill.

One real bill carries a claimable service and a car hire the law blocks outright, so a flag on the whole document would be wrong on most bills anybody actually receives.

Claimable

The ordinary case: tax your supplier charged you, on something the business bought for the business.

Not claimable

Real tax, but not yours to set off: a staff lunch, something bought for personal use.

Blocked under s.17(5)

The law refuses it outright, whatever it was for. Rent-a-cab is the one every business meets first.

Claimable plus not claimable plus blocked equals the tax on your bills, so the ITC summary reconciles against the purchase register. How purchases work →

No. 08Questions

Asked before buying.

01Does it do e-invoicing (IRN) or e-way bills?

No. Varynt Invoice does not register invoices with the IRP, so nothing it produces carries an IRN or a signed QR, and it raises no e-way bills. If your turnover puts you above the e-invoicing threshold, you would need a separate IRP utility alongside it, so it probably isn't the right fit for you today.

02Does it file my GSTR-1?

No. It produces the sales register and a GST summary split the way GSTR-1 splits it, which your CA uses to prepare the return. Filing stays with you and your CA.

03I'm under the Composition scheme. Can I use it?

Yes. Your documents are titled Bill of Supply, carry no tax lines, and print the declaration that you are a composition taxable person not eligible to collect tax.

04I'm registered in more than one state.

Each branch carries its own GSTIN, address, invoice series and bank. The branch you bill from decides the seller's state.
